In the midst of 2020 with the coronavirus pandemic, the racial and social unrest, and the political unknown of our future. It's safe to say that on the music side of things we had one of the best years when it comes to music releases. There were so many great songs that came out this year that we had to pick some of our favorites. so here is a list of "The Best Songs of 2020".
Before we get started here's a couple of rules:
1: Since this is a ranked list we know that we have probably missed some of your favorite tracks if that's the case then please share them in the comments.
2: This is our list. This is by our collective opinions what we thought were the best tracks that the year had to offer.
3: Like any other list there is some personal bias in these lists so if we did not pick one of your personal favorite tracks please do not take any personal offense to it.
So without further a deux. here is the list. Enjoy.
50: Dua Lipa - 'Break My Heart' COURTESY OF WARNER RECORDS
The pop market soared with so many great tracks and one of those being the ultra 80's pop anthem 'Break My Heart' by the super talented Dua Lipa. Her record "Future Nostalgia" was one of the biggest highlights in pop this year and this song being among the best of that record. The sensual vibes along with the super catchy 80's pop hooks make for an entertaining listen and a fantastic jam out track that you never get tired of.
49: The 1975 - 'People' COURTESY OF DIRTY HIT RECORDS/POLYDOR RECORDS
One of the biggest and out there surprises of the year was the heavily political punk anthem from none other than The 1975. The heavy 80's punk tones mixing with a harsher vocal register from vocalist Matty Healy being very reminiscent of acts like At The Drive-In, Refused, and oddly enough Joy Division; made for an impactful listen from a pissed off Matty Healy and a great punk banger from an otherwise more pop leaning band.
48: Loathe - 'Two-Way Mirror' COURTESY OF SHARPTONE RECORDS
Loathe are arguably one of the biggest surprises that 2020's post-hardcore scene had to offer with their offering of panic inducing post-hardcore mixed with the beautiful industrial tinges to their sound being reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails and Deftones. 'Two Way Mirror' is a phenomenal track that takes everything that the band are good at and amplifies it tenfold. Truly one of the most exciting bands that the scene has to offer.

In the world of soulful alternative rock Off Road Minivan are managing to make the sound unique again and with their track 'You' they manage to make the genre sound so original to them and make it sound hopeful. 46: Silverstein - 'Infinite' COURTESY OF UNFD
In the midst of band's seemingly changing their sounds to fit in modern molds in comes Silverstein with the lightning in the bottle that is "A Beautiful Place To Drown" and the track that perfectly houses both their newer pop-punk leaning sounds along with their signature post-hardcore and screamo kick; and with the added aggression of Underoath and The Almost fame Aaron Gillespie bringing in both his signature grit and even some backing screams thrown in for good measure which makes it a perfect screamo track with added early 2000's scene nostalgia.
45: JunkBunny - 'Another Summer Song' COURTESY OF REPUBLIC RECORDS/LAVA RECORDS
While some might know this pop-punk and 90's post-grunge styled band JunkBunny from their induction on the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 soundtrack but others might know them as a band of teens with a unique of rock that fills your soul with energetic guitar licks and summery groove. 'Another Summer Song' is a perfect example of blending two worlds together to make something incredible; mixing early 2000's era pop-punk ala The Starting Line or Yellowcard with a slight edge of 90's post-grunge ala Foo Fighters. JunkBunny are doing something right and 'Another Summer Song' is a smash that you need to let your eardrums sink deeper into.
44: Tigerwine - 'Black Water' COURTESY OF TOOTH & NAIL RECORDS
The amount of small bands putting out incredible work stacked this year and one of those incredible works was none other than Tigerwine's phenomenal descent into madness "Nothing Is For You" and the track that turned heads 'Black Water' is something of sure excellence. Tigerwine are known for putting out incredible pieces of work with 'Black Water' and "Nothing Is For You" topping it off; The amount of aggression felt in one song is mesmerizing, the emotion felt throughout the track is intoxicating, and the sure drive and passion within the song is unexplainable. 43: Ocean Grove - 'Sense Again' COURTESY OF UNFD
In the sea of small bands doing incredible things with the rock genre we have the all out rocker 'Sense Again' by Ocean Grove from their underrated record "Flip Phone Fantasy". A record that flows with 90's nostalgia and 'Sense Again' being it's biggest standout is one of the most energetic rock tracks that hits hard with 90's nostalgic alt rock and pop-punk reminding us of good summer hangs and great rocking tunes of that time frame and just how joyous the simpler times were before quarantine.
42: Lurk - 'Pressure Points' COURTESY OF PURE NOISE RECORDS
The summer housed some of the best music that the year had to offer that's for sure and one of the newest discoveries was the infectious post-punk band Lurk and their oldschool ready punk anthem 'Pressure Points'. The Stooges are a big influence that you hear in the track as the british punk vibes along with some canadian punk flare (ala Billy Talent or Alexisonfire) makes the song an instant hit. 'Pressure Points' is a fantastic track that feels right at home with some of the greats that the punk scene has to offer.

When it comes to pop-rock this year we saw a huge splash of creativity in the genre and My Kid Brother are among some of the best out there and their track 'Native Tongue' we get a track that not only feels like a smash ripped out of the 2000's with a very The Strokes and The Kooks type of feeling throughout the track but it also does some new things that we haven't in pop-rock yet. It's easily one of the best summer jams of the year and an underrated one at that.
40: Paradise Now - 'Monster' COURTESY OF TOOTH & NAIL RECORDS
The alternative rock scene has proven to us that there is still creativity and evolution in the genre and Paradise Now have been flexing that urge since their rise to the scene last year with their fantastic ep "Supernatural" and with this track 'Monster' featuring the vocal talents of Ryan Kirby of Fit For A King fame we see that flex carry over with one of the best dark pop tracks of the year. The vocal chemistry between vocalists are other worldly and the dark and menacing tone throughout the track is intense and memorable leaving a lasting impression that the band are already good at.
39: Man Ov God - 'Black Sheep' COURTESY OF MAN OV GOD/INDEPENDENT
The trap scene managed to make a name for itself with some rising acts showing true potential. Take for example the heavy metal vocalist Brook Reeves and his new project Man Ov God a project that if you are a fan of Impending Doom you should get excited about. 'Black Sheep' is death-trap at it's finest bringing in elements of Scarlxrd and Ghostkid in the fix while also having the aggression that of Impending Doom. It's death-trap meets the aggression of Impending Doom and it looks like Man Ov God isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
38: Five Iron Frenzy - 'So We Sing' COURTESY OF FIVE IRON FRENZY/INDEPENDENT
There's no doubt that the ska scene is still alive and well given the different projects that we have seen this year alone and believe or not Five Iron Frenzy are a part of that list with their track 'So We Sing' from their upcoming album "Until This Shakes Apart". 'So We Sing' is a great comeback track for the band and more of a "return to form" in their sound from their previous more rock driven album "Engine Of A Million Plots" to that of say "Upbeats And Breakdowns" or "Our Newest Album Ever!". It's a great ska-punk track and it's great to see the band return to music after a seven year hiatus.
37: MxPx - 'Worries' COURTESY OF MXPX/ROCK CITY RECORDS
It's safe to say that MxPx are veterans at what they do in both the pop-punk and punk rock scenes and it's awesome to see bands of this caliber continuing to put out great music and their track 'Worries' is nothing short of excellent. If you know MxPx then you know that this band can write a hook and with this track 'Worries' they manage to check worries at the door with a full throttle anthem perfect for the current situation that everyone is facing right now whilst being stuck in quarantine. 'Worries' is a fun song that is able to lighten any type of mood that you might be feeling and a great track worthy of the band's great catalog.
36: Lecrae - 'Drown' COURTESY OF REACH RECORDS
One of the greatest collaborations of the year has to grow to the powerful 'Drown' by Lecrae featuring John Legend; a powerful moment from his new album "Restoration" that was released during the black lives matter protests back in the summer. This track is everything that you would want from a Lecrae and John Legend collab and then some; with the production on the track being so poignant, the flows from Lecrae being on point, and the vocal chemistry between both Lecrae and John Legend is mesmerizing. This track was needed and very timely for the current situations that our country is facing and it's an incredible track that should be turned up time and time again.
35: Acceptance - 'Cold Air' COURTESY OF TOOTH & NAIL RECORDS
Firstly a huge shoutout to Tooth & Nail Records for having such an amazing year for releases; the team there truly outdid themselves. And with this track 'Cold Air' by one of the biggest surprises of the year Acceptance making their way back to music with a sound that feels both common to Acceptance but also feels new and unique to the band. 'Cold Air' takes on loneliness in the most early 2000's emo way possible by making a super depressing song lively and full of character. Taking the styling of The Killers and The Gaslight Anthem and combining them into a powerful power pop ballad filled with emotion and clarity cultivating in an emo-pop ballad that you can't get enough of.
34: Knuckle Puck - 'Tune You Out' COURTESY OF RISE RECORDS
The changing of sound while still retaining what makes your band unique can be a task that ruins the core of what your band is. Lucky for Knuckle Puck that does not happen as their new record "20/20" managed to retain everything that the band is good at while combining it with a new more heavier sound. 'Tune You Out' being the featured track feels like a natural evolution of what Knuckle Puck is while combining sounds compared to that of Movements and a more post-hardcore esque sound while still having that same core sound that is pop-punk. 'Tune You Out' is a fantastic cut and a major highlight from "20/20" that fits right in their catalog as one of the band's best tracks to date.

Boston Manor really managed to step up their game with what they provided on "Glue" with the track 'Ratking' being on top of the food chain. A fantastic cut from a fantastic record that should get all the love that it deserves.

Pop-Punk's female led band Yours Truly have been captivating fans with their straight to the point but oh so well enjoyed pop-punk sound with some elements of pop-rock and power-pop spliced in the mix for a good balance; and when they hit the scene they hit it hard with some of the catchiest pop-punk of the modern generation, and with their track 'Composure' we continue down that path as 'Composure' is one of the catchiest pop-punk tunes out there that you need to hear.
28: Hayley Williams - 'Simmer' COURTESY OF ATLANTIC RECORDS
Hayley Williams returning as a solo artist was a well needed shock for modern music. Going from well crafted pop-punk and pop-rock with Paramore to a more grittier and glossier sound with her solo outing 'Petals For Armor' which housed one of the best pop songs of the year and that's 'Simmer'. 'Simmer' is nothing short of excellent creating a sound that is a close cousin to the sound of "After Laughter" while also paving a lane of it's own creating a unique gritty pop sound that was much needed. But what also is great is All Time Low teaming up with The Band Camino in a fantastic track of both band's sounds coming together and making something great. It's an incredible track and a perfect summer track to boot.

Planning out the top 25 was a difficult task but clocking in at number 25 we have the 80's styled synth rocker 'Leave Me Alone' by the talented minds of Dallon Weekes and Ryan Seaman otherwise known as I Don't Know How But They Found Me. It's a fantastic track from a great band that's still putting out excellent djenty metalcore and just overall metal to this very day.

Crushingly beautiful and depressingly motivational music is what Spanish Love Songs bring to the table on their well loved album "Brave Faces Everyone" and their track 'Self-Destruction (As A Sensible Career Choice)' is one of those songs that feels like it was stripped right out of the early 2000's pop-punk and emo scenes with The Wonder Years and Jimmy Eat World both being perfect examples on how describe Spanish Love Songs and their depressing sound of beautiful emo rock soul. Chaotic japanese nu-metalcore with elements of hardcore, beatdown, and deathcore is what the metal band Crystal Lake create on their reimagined album "The Voyages" and their track 'Into The Great Beyond' is an all out wall of noise with devastatingly heavy breakdowns, heavy hardcore riffage, manic screams from vocalist Ryo Kinoshita, and an overall sense of madness and deathly howls of demonic proportions that makes 'Into The Great Beyond' a fantastic track that would make any metal fan headbang their cares away.
14: Taylor Swift - 'The Lakes' COURTESY OF REPUBLIC RECORDS
No one expected the direction that Taylor Swift would be taking would be as artistic as "Folklore" is and yet here we are. "Folklore" is a masterpiece in of itself but the best track on the record was relegated to a bonus track and that is 'The Lakes'. 'The Lakes' is quite simply the prettiest and darkly beautiful and poetic tracks that Taylor Swift has ever made; the calming nature of the track along with the subtle plucking of an acoustic guitar puts the track into a zen like state of mind. 'The Lakes' is phenomenal and should be regarded as one of Taylor Swift's best moments.
13: Twenty One Pilots - 'Level Of Concern' COURTESY OF FUELED BY RAMEN
In the midst of a world wide pandemic leave it to Twenty One Pilots to bring a ray of sunshine over our quarantined souls. 'Level Of Concern' had smash hit written on it right as you hit play; it has everything that you could want from a TOP track written at home during a pandemic. The added guitar along with the band's signature electronics and drum fills from Josh Dun are spot on, and the uber catchy chorus along with the flawless vocals from Tyler Joseph is everything that you could want from a TOP track. Although this doesn't come close to the perfection that was "Trench" there's still so much to love here and it just gets better every time you listen to it.
12: Code Orange - 'Swallowing The Rabbit Whole' COURTESY OF ROADRUNNER RECORDS
There's no explaining the madness that is Code Orange as their evolving sound combinies the likes of thrash metal, hardcore punk, heavy metal, deathcore, metalcore, and others make their sound all over the place but in a way makes everything work in their favor. It's weird to say this but Deftones came back with one of their best records in "Ohms" and with their track also titled 'Ohms' is everything that one could want from a rock song from the band. Taking elements from "Diamond Eyes" and "White Pony" and combining them into a rocking tune that fully encapsulates everything that fans love about Deftones and more. Hitting our top 10 we have something that we did not expect was the surprising return from System Of A Down with two incredible tracks that were spreading awareness of the war currently going on in their home country of Armenia raising money for relief efforts to help benefit their home country; but did the songs have to be this good?. 'Genocidal Humannoidz' is quite possibly one of the heaviest tracks that the year had to offer as it's thrash metal attitude and added hits of death metal and heavy metal added to the mix is staggering. Seeing the return of SOAD was an incredible moment of 2020 and 'Genocidal Humannoidz' is quite simply one of the best tracks that the year had to offer.

The year also saw the return of Love And Death after being on a long awaited hiatus with fans anticipating their return and with their return we saw the release of the phenomenal 'Down' a hard rocking track that sees the band return to form in the best way possible. 8: The Weeknd - 'Blinding Lights' COURTESY OF REPUBLIC RECORDS/XO
The brilliant mind of Abel Tesfaye's The Weeknd not only managed to put the best pop album of 2020 with "After Hours" but he also put the best pop song of the year and that is 'Blinding Lights', a gritty 80's pop anthem that hits with powerful synth-pop punches, soulful and smooth vocals from Abel, and the almost sci-fi esque cinematic elements to the track make it an enthralling listen that just gets better and better. For the majority of the year Spiritbox have been excelling themselves in every way possible and with their new track 'Constance' we get a beautifully haunting track that will have you in tears as lead vocalist Courtney LaPlante takes your emotions and kicks them to the curb as the track fills you with such a heavy weight. 'Constance' is a beautiful track and it is up there with some of the best metalcore tracks to come out this year but what this track does that some don't is leave you wanting the feeling of sadness to be swept away but it also leaves you wanting more. It's a beautiful track that only Spiritbox could make and it is nothing short of amazing.
6: The Ghost Inside - 'Aftermath' COURTESY OF EPITAPH RECORDS
Hardcore vets The Ghost Inside literally went through hell and back to come back with full force and somehow they did it and with success as their record "The Ghost Inside" managed to be the most compelling hardcore release of the year and their track 'Aftermath' we got to see all of that hard work pay off with emotional results. If you are a fan of The Ghost Inside and you know about the deathly bus crash in 2015 and have been with them throughout their recovery then you know that 'Aftermath' is a love letter to their fanbase and this song is just something incredible. Welcome back The Ghost Inside, we missed you.
5: Fallstar - 'SSRI Feel Better Already' COURTESY OF FACEDOWN RECORDS/RAT FAMILY RECORDS
Now as we step into the top 5 we see yet another return in the veil of Fallstar and their insane comeback single 'SSRI Feel Better Already' which ups the anti of everything that they have done at this point into their career and expands on it tenfold as this is one of the band's catchiest and well thought out tracks of their career. It's a fantastic comeback track that harkens back to the sounds of their previous releases with a hint of the band's side project Northlander. It's a great track that has once again put Fallstar on the map right where they should be.
4: August Burns Red - 'Defender' COURTESY OF FEARLESS RECORDS
Clocking into the top 4 we have the sure brilliance that is August Burns Red's 'Defender' from their album "Guardians". A fantastic track that sends you off into a blaze of sure metalcore excellence. Combining everything that the band is known for and takes it to new heights with one of the best tracks that the band has ever created. It's a brutal beatdown of a moment that just kicks everything up to 11 as the crushing guitars, the manic vocals, and the hammering drums make for an unbelievable moment of melodic-metalcore bliss. Who will deliver the sentence indeed.
3: Silent Planet - 'Trilogy' COURTESY OF SOLID STATE RECORDS/UNFD
Silent Planet have been one of the most exciting bands in the past and they continue to be innovative with their track 'Trilogy'. An all out insanity of a track that takes all of the band's best attributes and amplifies them to higher degrees. 'Trilogy' is in a sense just pure insanity from the djent like riffs, the vocal chemistry between vocalists Garrett Russell and Thomas Freckleton, the hole that is that breakdown, and just the overall sure insanity of the track makes for an insane listen that only Silent Planet can provide.
2: Fit For A King - 'Locked (In My Head)' COURTESY OF SOLID STATE RECORDS
No one expected much from new Fit For A King after the divisive "Dark Skies" but the fanbase was shook by how cohesive "The Path" turned out to be. 'Locked (In My Head)' the track featured here is a very good example of how to evolve your sound without losing touch of who you are. 'Locked (In My Head)' in a sense is the best way to do pop-metal and it shows with flying colors; the song's overall flow and chemistry is to be commended here, from the powerful vocal chemistry between vocalists Ryan Kirby and Ryan 'Tuck' O'Leary, the riffage between it's guitarists Daniel Gailey and Bobby Lynge, to the impeccable drumming from Jared Easterling. It's all here and it all works perfectly here as 'Locked (In My Head) is a feet in modern evolution and it would be our number one best song of the year but that goes too...
1: Bring Me The Horizon - 'Parasite Eve' COURTESY OF SONY MUSIC/RCA RECORDS
If you have been following us throughout the year then you know that this would be at the top of the list because no one expected that Bring Me The Horizon's comeback would be this good and this heavy. 'Parasite Eve' is all kinds of brutal and equally as catchy, the Linkin Park influences are fluent here but the sure amount of old BMTH that is shown off here is without a doubt some of the strongest material that we have seen from the band. It's chaotic, it has a sense of panic, it's a middle finger to the overall year that was 2020, it mocks the pandemic with added references to the cult horror game "Parasite Eve", and it features some of the band's most fierce components that we have ever seen on display. It's hard rock with elements of metalcore, nu-metal, and a hint of electronic death metal and it's equally all as terrifying. It's great to see Bring Me The Horizon getting back to making heavy music again and once we hit play on 'Parasite Eve' we knew that this was something special and it is without a doubt the best song of 2020.
