In the current world of hip hop the brand has now been associated either soundcloud rap or trap rap, but there is one rapper that has been making a name for himself with his own brand of "Happy Rap" is the one and only Peabod; who made a big splash in 2018 with his debut full length titled "Healthy Snacks" which was a nice mix of quirky yet thought provoking pop rap and alternative hip hop ala John Reuben or Hoodie Allen.
With this new track "Big Feelings" however we see a more darker style and tone compared to Peabod's previous work dealing with a wide variety of topics that currently plague modern life; this is definitely a more mature vibe for Peabod and it's a welcomed edition to his catalog.
Now Peabod is no stranger to having guest features on his tracks going from the likes of Hollyn, Sky The Pilot, Oweshin, Chad Mattson of Unspoken, Marty of Social Club Misfits. This time around it's underground rapper Aklesso who sounds perfect on this track while still leaving room for Peabod to do his own thing.
What's unique about Peabod's is the way he writes lyrics that are faith based but are not so overtly clear or in your face to the point where they sound preachy, it automatically reminds me of rappers like NF and John Reuben but also lyricists like Matt Thiessen of Relient K or Adam Young of Owl City; it's something that I've found interesting while digging through his music.
Some of the biggest lyrical high points come in the later half of the song starting with Aklesso's verse where he says "My soul got me purging these feelings that I'm wrestling with, Confused on what you feel?, just look to the one that's heaven sent" which seems like he's saying that amidst your doubts look to God because he is heaven sent.
Now the bridge of this track where Peabod explains his struggles with self doubt is something that everyone can relate to in some way during this time that we're all in with quarantine and covid-19; he says "The welcome was chilly, and now I feel silly, They said I'm too giddy, songs are too kiddie, Now I feel dizzy, tryna leave swiftly, But traffic's so busy, I'm stuck in this city, I guess they don't get me, I guess they're real picky, But God don't let my faith in people get too flimsy, The world was so pretty, but now I feel gritty, So God come quickly, cause I'". It's this moment in the track where you can feel his frustration with the public eye, and markets not finding his music marketable; It's this moment of realism that no one ever expected from a Peabod track that hits differently with the current state of the world that we live in right now.
This track is one of Peabod's best and it feels refreshing to hear a more honest and darker track from Peabod, and it's safe to say that Peabod isn't going anywhere anytime soon. - Samuel Cook
