Single Review | Phinehas "In The Night" (A genre defining comeback)

"DEATH FALLS LIKE A HAMMER FROM THE HEAVENS!"

Phinehas are back, and this time it's for good. After many rumors about the bands' return surfacing since late 2019, we finally have our hands on the lead single and the first taste of what's to come from the highly anticipated new record "The Fire Itself" once again through Solid State Records.

Throughout their career, Phinehas has shown impressive musical dexterity. From their earliest beginnings with their thrash roots, to the heavy-hitting and emotionally impacting "Till The End", and the impressive lyricism of "Dark Flag", Phinehas has proven time and time again that they can hold their own in the scene with some of the best and biggest metalcore bands in the scene as we know it.

What makes "In The Night" stand out from the rest of their discography, is the fact that it combines every sound that they have created over the years and improve upon it. The song comes completely with everything under the sun; a tribal-esque drumbeat in the beginning of the track, a dazzling display of riffing guitar and bass from both Daniel Gailey and Bryce Kelly, a beautiful display of drumming from Isaiah Perez, and an impressive range of vocals from vocalist Sean McCulloch. To summarize, "In The Night" sounds like a song ripped straight from the 2000's, while delivering powerful lyrics and also keeping in tune with the evolution of where the scene is now. It is an amazing song to say the least, and it may go down as one of the best songs in the bands' discography.

This is such an impressive comeback song for Phinehas, considering what the band has gone through since their hiatus in late 2019. In a recent post, vocalist Sean McColluch stated that "The past year and a half has been some of the darkest times in my life, but also the most rewarding." In an interview with HM Magazine about the new single, Sean states that "In The Night' is about pushing forward in the face of the unknown and the fear that holds us captive or stagnant... we have a purpose- if we would step forward and take it."

The anticipation builds as the clocks ticks down to the release and all the singles in-between, when "The Fire Itself" drops on August 27th. - Dylan Stearman
